Stylized but spasmodic, this Sweeney seems more interested in distancing than captivating an audience.. The cast would have been better served by a middle school production overseen by a creatively frustrated, inappropriately ambitious drama teacher than by this hacky, borderline-incompetent production .... The prettiness comes with brains, and the whole production, like those newly eye-catching models of American-made cars, bespeaks resurgent confidence.. It's as if Burton was born to direct it...
